Shawna + Aaron | American Lake

This wonderful couple will be getting married right outside his childhood home in a field surrounded by trees with American lake and Mt. Rainer in the background.  The clouds had settled in for the day, so there was no mountain view this time, which inspired us to run around taking pictures in the woods for a bit.  We had a great evening exchanging stories, websites and random hijinks.  I especially enjoyed the homemade baked goods and art tour from Aaron’s lovely mom.  I can honestly say that we’re going to rock your wedding this August and have ourselves a blast!!!

Norena - You look fantastic together.

Baby Times | Looking For That Smile

Marlee may not have been feeling very well when I showed up on Sunday, but we still managed to get some cute shots.  I’d have to say patience is the key to babies – and to embrace that you are on their time.  This little one is definitely happiest when she gets to do her own thing.  She’s the cutest little independent baby I know.

Kristie - Beautiful!!!!!!

Calley - that is the prettiest baby i've ever seen.

Hello Springtime | Farewell Woodinville

One thing I love about the spring is the brisk air on a lovely sunny day.  Springtime beckons me to be outside, so I decided to take a stroll to fully appreciate the changing seasons and also to say my goodbyes, since I will be moving back to Fremont at the end of the month.  I took this opportunity to enjoy an afternoon walk with Sam, our devoted family dog and actually brought along my camera for this venture.  I typically don’t lug around photography equipment when I’m soaking up the outdoors, but today was different.  Sam’s sparkling eyes and the setting sun inspired me to capture some memories to look back upon.

Jaxson | 4 months

It was a beautifully sunny day this Saturday – a perfect day for a walk and a little photography.  Elisha, Beau & Jaxson ventured out to Woodinville for a fun filled family shoot.  We started off outside of Molbaks and then found our way down to the Sammamish Slew – we trekked quite a ways, but it was worth the hike when we found the perfect flowering cherry tree to use as our backdrop.  Baby Jaxson is one mellow and friendly little guy and our day was full of nature discovery and great family moments.  Thanks for the memories.

Calley - Beautiful photos of the plummers. they look gorgeous. Jaxson is so handsome.

Performance Art | The Puppeteer

Dan Luce is an Olympian-based professional puppeteer who not only performs, but creates original Marionettes and large-scale puppets for a worldwide client base.  He is truly a master of his craft and I was lucky enough to watch him perform many years ago at a local music festival.  I was delighted to run into him once again at a Seattle showing by the experimental puppet troupe, NAKed PUPPets.  We officially met and decided to introduce his art with the likes of my 4×5 camera.  If your interested in seeing more of Dan’s work check out www.plopolympia.org, a new puppetry center in Olympia that offers performances and workshops for anyone who loves experimentation & innovation.

Marlee’s 3 month Birthday | 4 Generations

So, little Miss Marlee turned 3 months old and has been busy smiling and talking for everyone’s enjoyment.  Jessica contacted me for a special generational photo shoot with her mother, grandmother and new baby girl.  We decided to take our adventure to Molbak’s Nursery and garden store in Woodinville.  It was a wonderful experience with lots of chatting and adorable out-takes from Marlee, including my favorite shot at the end of this post with Marlee’s bottom lip really going at it.  Thanks to Jessica and her family for sharing this most special occasion with me and I can’t wait for our next photo adventure at the Tulip Festival!

Karla Marsh - Hi Ali, Thank you so much for being a part of our special day and for taking such beautiful pictures. You make the whole experience so much fun and so very relaxing. I am grateful for your expertise and what a gift/talent that you have. I am so looking forward to many many more photo experiences with you.. Karla

You Are Amazing | So… smile. smile. smile…

I love this. I had a perma-smile throughout this video. Life’s too short so go ahead and be happy…. it’s often contagious.

Jill + Scott | Sweet & Simple

I had the privilege of photographing this wonderful couple at Shilshole Bay Beach Club on Saturday with my favorite photographer, Jenn Repp. Their wedding took place at sunset with views of Puget Sound.  Jill’s daughter was the Maid of Honor and her son walked her down the aisle, while Scott’s father stood beside him as the best man.  Luckily, it stopped raining after the ceremony and we were able to get some beautiful shots outside – Scott did a fantastic job of keeping Jill warm from the cold November winds. This was a sweet, simple and intimate celebration with one gorgeous bride.  You’re a lucky man Scott, but you already knew that.  Thanks again for the wonderful day and enjoy your warm honeymoon in Arizona!

Sara - Sooo sweet. Love it Ali!

Going Green | Wedding Ideas

I’ve been reading up on different ways I can make my business more eco-friendly and came across many wonderful ideas for creating a more environmentally friendly wedding.  You don’t have to live and breathe environment to have a greener wedding, and you’ll often find that being green is less expensive.  That’s something we can all appreciate.

Invitations

Use recycled paper or alternatives like bamboo or hemp for invitations.  Instead of  inserts consider creating a blog or website and include the URL on the invitations.  Your guests can go there to rsvp, get directions, find lodging, etc.  If you’ve never set up a site or blog, companies such as Blogger provide easy and free tools to create one.

Studio Olivine is an eco-friendly company in Portland, Oregon that creates hand made wedding invitations. www.studio-olivine.com

Catering

Find a caterer who specializes in local and organic food or ask the venue’s preferred caterers and bakers if they can do your event organically.  Eating local food reduces the amount of oil needed to transport it to different locations, reduces pollution and supports local economy.  Organic food is not only healthier, but it also reduces the amount of pesticides that are put into the environment, which are harmful to the people that eat them, the workers that harvest the crop, and wildlife that live in the area.

Ravishing Radish is a great example of this practice in Seattle. www.ravishingradish.com

Flowers

Buy local whenever possible and always opt for organic flowers.  Seasonal and uncut flowers for bouquets and centerpieces can be replanted and used again. Potted or dried arrangements can also double as favors.

Floressence Design is one example of a florist who can customize a plan for your weddingwww.floressencedesign.com

Clothing

Buy a once-used wedding dress or go vintage.  You can also choose bridesmaid dresses that can be worn again.  If you prefer buying something new there’s natural materials such as organic silk or hemp.

Here’s an example of where to find recycled dresses. www.preownedweddingdresses.com

Jewelry

Eco-friendly wedding rings can show commitment to sustainability, protection of the environment, fair trade and conservation of the earth’s resources.  People are getting killed all over the diamond trade in war-torn African nations. Without getting into too much depth about the moral issues, watch Blood Diamond and you’ll get a glimpse of why it’s important to buy your rings responsibly.  Cultured diamonds and gemstones are the most ecologically friendly gems, since they are not mined out of the earth, but grown in a lab.  They are also significantly less expensive, which has definite appeal.  My favorite option is going vintage, whether it was handed down to you or bought from an antique shop.  A family heirloom is always special and you can have it reworked into something that is more your style.

These jewelers offer custom designs and will reuse your old jewelry to create something new. www.greenkarat.com or www.brilliantearth.com
One of my personal favorite antique Jewelers is Alana located inside Northgate Mall. www.alanajewelry.com

Venue

Have your ceremony and reception at the same location.  The less guests have to travel, the cheaper for them and the less oil consumed. During the warmer months consider having an outdoor wedding which will reduce the amount of energy needed.  If you hold the event indoors, try to find a venue with more natural light.

Transportation

Organize a car pool or hire vans to transport everyone to and from the venue.  This saves fuel and ensures the safe return home for any guests who partake in a little too much celebratory toasting.  If you’re having photos done off site of your venue, renting a bus is a fantastic way to transport family and bridal party to different locations.  This way you can ensure everyone will be there on time and have yourselves a fun, stress-free adventure.

Elizabeth - These are some really good ideas! Glad you took the time to compose this useful article:)

Meet Marlee | 3 weeks old

I photographed Jessica & Michael’s wedding July 5, 2008.  It was actually their vow renewals.  Their original nuptials was a very quick, spur of the moment BBQ with just a handful of family and friends in her parents backyard.  FOUR years later… Jessica finally got the big wedding and celebration she had always wanted.  Many months later…. their precious newborn daughter, Marlee, arrived into the world.  I should mention that Michael is a SGT in the Army and flew in from Afghanistan in time for the birth.  Thank you Jessica & Michael for a wonderful photo session in your home.   Marlee is beautiful and full of life, just like you guys.Marlee_032
